The Science

Why Nattokinase + NAC?

Nattokinase is a proteolytic enzyme derived from natto. Of particular interest, laboratory research found nattokinase could degrade SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in cultured cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. This is intriguing mechanistic research, but it does not establish that oral nattokinase removes spike protein from the human body.

NAC works differently. It supplies cysteine used by the body to produce glutathione, one of the body's major endogenous antioxidant systems. NAC's role as a glutathione precursor and its antioxidant mechanisms are well established.

NAC has also been investigated clinically in COVID-19. The evidence remains mixed: some recent meta-analyses report potential benefits, while others have found insufficient evidence for routine treatment. That is why we position Enhanced NAC as nutritional antioxidant and glutathione support, rather than a treatment for COVID-19 or Long COVID.
